Contending with Your Enemy, Removing the Tempter's Covering, and Possessing Your Spoils:

A 40 Day Prayer Focus

By Chuck D. Pierce

I believe this is a season that we must break Satan's scheme set against our lives. During our gathering of prophets in January, the Lord began to show us how Satan was using occult sprits to keep many of those who were plotting against God's covenant plan, covered and hidden. We knew that we would have to enlist all of you to pray corporately so that the strongman could be uncovered. Let's submit ourselves to God and resist the enemy together, personally as well as corporately, on behalf of this nation. Let's ask the Lord to reveal terrorist plots being devised by the enemy to create fear and bring destruction to God's people.

The enemy plots and plans on our path to develop a strategy to divert us from accomplishing God's will and entering into His blessings. Many of us have a hard time seeing the enemy's snare that has been strategically planted on our path of life. Therefore, we step in this tangled web and spend much of our time struggling to free ourselves from his distractions and plan of conforming. To conform means to develop a blueprint that will mold us into the way of the world instead of us staying free to think God's way and walking in the present truth of this age.

Satan forms a covering that hides his ways . We must look past the visible to see the invisible and any supernatural force that would trap us, keeping us from accomplishing the Lord's will. Let me describe Lucifer, the devil, from Ezekiel 28. This chapter says “he was the model of perfection and covered and adorned with every type of jewel … He was anointed as a guardian cherub and overshadowed or covered every place he walked … until wickedness was found in him. Then he was filled with violence. His heart became proud on account of his beauty. He corrupted wisdom and through the abundance of commerce was filled with lawlessness and violence. Through this, he desecrated sanctuaries (paraphrased).”

I feel its time for us to address this covering in prayer. The covering is related to occult spirits. Occult means: to conceal or cause to disappear from view, secret, mysterious, and supernatural. This is a year to uncover that which is secret and for mysteries to be revealed. I am presently writing a chapter, “How to Blind the Evil Eye,” for a book Doris Wagner is editing. Satan hides his ways from the eye of our understanding. Therefore, our eye must be filled with light. He creates occult lines (geometric lines throughout the earth), qualities, and uses magic and devious words to hide his place from sight. He uses the atmosphere around us to conceal his plan. He creates a veil. Other ways of looking at this is that he hides, conceals, secrets, caches, screens, buries, cloaks, masks and disguises his plan so he can keep us from uncovering God's fullness in the earth. Another synonym is block; he will use deceptive methods to block our path. Satan has ways to watch after his iniquitous streams in the earth. Therefore, we need to become active and pray for 40 days to remove any veil that is blocking or hiding God's best for our life. Worship is key as we move forward in this.

The Body of Christ cannot afford to stand still and embrace any passivity this year. Dr. Frank Hammond, a dear friend, says this about passivity: “One of the biggest challenges confronting a deliverance ministry is passivity in the person to whom I am ministering. Unless the will is activated, failure is certain. Active faith is essential in receiving anything from God, and this includes deliverance. ‘ What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save [Greek sozo, deliver] him? … faith by itself, if it does not have works is dead' ( Jas 2:14, 17). When a person accepts Christ as Savior he immediately becomes a Christian soldier. He has entered warfare against Satan and his host of evil spirits. In order to defeat the devil's wiles we must ‘ put on the whole armor of God' , ‘ wrestle against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places ', ‘ resist the devil', and employ spiritual weapons which are ‘ mighty in God for pulling down strongholds '. In the name of Jesus we are commissioned to ‘cast out demons'. All this requires commitment and total aggressiveness against Satan's kingdom. \Without aggressiveness, one automatically falls into passivity and becomes open prey to the devil for, ‘ The devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour '. Therefore, we must ‘ resist him, steadfast in the faith ' (I Pet. 5:8, 9).” Always remember, the enemy wants to block your path. If he can tempt and divert you from your course, he can stop you from entering into the full portion (inheritance) that God has for you. He will develop strategies against you to bring deception and then division. He develops ways to accuse you so he can hold you in condemnation. He wants to block your supply and release a spirit of infirmity or weakness against you. Do not be ignorant of his wiles.

The Tempter is watching for the first moment that you enter into passivity . He watches for your passivity so he can redirect your path. He knows if you stay on the path God created for you, you will overthrow his plan and accomplish all that God planned for you. The Tempter wants to stop your influence at this time. After mid April we will see great conflict in this land. You will be fine as long as you stay on the path. God has a distinct path for each one of us. By being at the right place at the right time you will prosper. Proverbs 3:3-10 is worth memorizing. Verse 5 says, “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart …” Let the Lord become your security. “… and he will direct your path .” If you trust in Him, He will lead you into passion. “ Lean not on your own understanding ”. He will lead you into the passion He has for you if you don't let your mind rule you. The Amplified says He will heal your nerve endings.” Memorize this – it works! Our emotions can be imbedded by the devil and he can lead you in the wrong direction. This is a key time to learn this! Trust in the Lord! The tempter will work against you through distrust.

How does the TEMPTER operate? The word tempt means to prove, to try, to be involved in a trial, and to be moved into distrust against an authority in your life. Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted. Let all of your temptations come under control of the Spirit of God . Temptation is designed to refine your path . Consequently, we need to process our circumstances under the direction of the Holy Spirit. Temptation puts your faith and patience to a test. The TEMPTER has RIGHT to tempt us. Temptation is not sin … until you agree. Do not allow the Tempter to overtake you. Use him to produce new overcoming faith in you. The tempter places evil on your path to divert you from God's destination for you. Even if he has trapped or defeated you in the past, know that God can get you back to your path .

The Tempter's strategy is to tempt you over who God is and what He has said to you! He wants you to believe God is not directing you. He wants you to believe God is holding out on you to make you shift from where you are. He sends others to tempt you . Remember Job's wife. In the midst of Job's trials she said, “Curse God and die!” When God speaks to you, the word of God will be tempted in you. The word God gave Joseph was tested. The Word will be tested to refine you so it can manifest in your life. Joseph was tested in many ways - through betrayal, accusation, abandonment, imprisonment and rejection. To accomplish his goals, Satan must find a way to entice you with these things on your path. His goal is to get you to fail in your tests. This stops you from producing a TESTIMONY! Temptation has possibilities of holiness as well as of sin. Choose to be HOLY! Set aside a time for the Lord to sanctify you. Being tempted is one thing, but falling to temptation is another thing. One may rejoice in being tempted (James 1:2). However, when we fall, Satan clothes us with shame, disgrace and condemnation. Choose to rejoice as you defeat your enemy!

The Tempter is a legalist. He will devise legalistic strategies to narrow your way. He will manipulate times! Satan tempts us to every kind of evil and lays snares for us - even in our best actions. He lays inducements before our minds to solicit us to sin (1 Cor 7:5; 1 Thess 3:5; James 1:13-14). Satan is called "the serpent of old," "the devil," and "the tempter" (Rev 12:9; Matt 4:3). After Jesus endured every test , the Tempter departed till an opportune time. Jesus has already taken every temptation that can be thrown at you. Ask yourself: 1 . Is there anything God has asked that I am not doing? 2 . Is there anything I need to do to fulfill righteousness and close any doors open to the enemy? 3. Am I filled with the Spirit? Command the voice of the Tempter to be exposed! Some of you are on the verge of great multiplication and promotion. Stay steadfast and do not give in to his wiles. Your testimony will fully dethrone his power and you will find yourself with your foot on your enemy's neck!

The Tempter is preparing and plotting a scheme to arise in our land. This will be a season that the enemy sends great temptations to divert us from staying steady on the path that God has ordained for us. We must CONTEND with the Tempter now! To contend means to grate against, to anger, to meddle, to stir up and to strive for victory. Is. 50:8 says, “ Let us stand together: who is mine adversary?Let him come near to me.” We must not draw back from our enemy at this time in the history of the church, nor in the history of this nation . Moses told the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 2:24, “ Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.” The time has come to cross over and battle for the inheritance of this land. We must contend for the House of God to reflect His wineskin for this age. Nehemiah contended with the rulers and said: “… Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place .” Beware of contending with foolish entanglements . Proverbs 29:9 says, “ If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest. ” Do not let the enemy lead you into battles that are too great for you. One promise the Lord is speaking to me is from Isaiah 49:25, “… for I will contend with him that contends with thee, and I will save thy children .” Our families are being distracted from God's purposes. Yet He is contending with the enemy for our children so they might understand His Spirit . In Jude we find, “… and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. This is a season to contend for our faith. Religious spirits will arise to stop our faith from increasing.

Contend means to vie with a rival and bring to close a point of contention. This word is linked with struggling for victory. Another word very closely related to contend is “wrestle”. Eph 6:12 says, “ For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Wrestle comes from the word pallo, which means to vibrate or shake. Shake your enemy off of your back. This word also means a contest between two in which each endeavors to throw the other to the ground. The victor is decided when the opponent is held down and the victor's foot is put upon the opponent's neck. This is linked with the Christian's struggle with the power of evil. Do not be afraid to contend this season! Satan knows that we are on the verge of breakthrough! The enemy has heard of the anointing that is being released. Consequently, he must counterattack by releasing a horde of seducing spirits now! BEWARE OF THE DANGER OF SPIRITUAL RELAXATION! Be patient, but be on the offensive! Keep prophetic revelation flowing from heaven into your heart (Prov. 29:18). Keep your vision adjusted and refined! “Though vision tarry, contend and wait for it.”

10 DAYS OF PRAYER: Remove the Enemy's Covering

Day 1: Read Genesis 3. Notice that the enemy has a voice to bring deception into our life. Ask God to show you any deception or lie he has brought into your life.

Day 2: Read John 8, especially verse 44. Notice he is the father of lies and can only work with any resource that we give him. Cut ties with anything in your soulish nature that is holding you captive.

Day 3: Read 1 John 2-3. A sk the Lord to fill you with His love so that you can break any sin strategy in your life and destroy the devil's work.

Day 4: Read Luke 4. Notice how Jesus resisted the voice of the enemy. Ask the Lord to fill you with the Sprit in the midst of your wilderness so you can resist and receive new power.

Day 5: Read 1 Sam 30 . Trust the Lord to connect you with those who can pursue and overtake your enemy. Break discouragement; develop a strategy of pursuit and recover all.

Day 6: Read Ezra 8 . Stop and let the Lord show you the enemy that is on the road ahead of you.

Day 7: Read Nehemiah 2 . Let God develop the plan to rebuild that which is broken down in your life.

Day 8: Read Matthew 12 . Thank the Lord for the cross. Declare that the passion of the cross arise in you.

Day 9: Read Ezekiel 28. Let God reveal to you the supernatural qualities that the enemy possesses.

Day 10: Read Isaiah 14. Continue to allow revelation to come into you on Lucifer's hidden characteristics.

Day 11: Read Psalm 23. Thank Him that He is Jehovah Rohi and will lead you into restoration in your life.

Day 12: Read Hosea 10:11 . Unshakable praise plows through the hardest ground. When the ground is hard, when the circumstances are adverse, God's favor is on the one who will lead off with praise. Fallow ground will break up. Declare the plow of praise will cut through the un-giving Earth and make a way for the good seed of the Word to be planted.

Day 13: Read Psalm 30:5 . Weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning” ( NASB ). Unshakable praise must keep going. Judah goes first through wilderness experiences. Judah goes first in the war for our inheritance. Judah goes first to plow a way into new territory. Judah goes first when the cost is great.

Day 14: Read James 5. The Word of God tells us to submit ourselves to God, draw near to Him and then resist the devil. I believe that as we worship and submit ourselves to a holy God, we can come into intimate contact with Him. Even though we walk here on the earth in our worshipful submission, we ascend into Heaven. As we individually seek God and ascend into the Throne Room, we can hear the sound in Heaven in our spirit man on Earth.

Day 15: Read Ephesians 1. Put on a CD or tape and worship God. Ask Him for wisdom and revelation to fill your inner being and that the eyes of your understanding would be enlightened.

Day 16: Ask God for a new Song of the Spirit . The new song is mentioned seven times in the Old Testament (six references in Psalms, one in Isaiah 42:10). It is referred to once in the New Testament (Rev. 5:9). This should inform us that both Psalms and Revelation publish theology that is sung. Before scriptural trust is systematized, it is sung. The Church must always sing ahead of its theology, because our hearts must be impacted before our minds are informed; otherwise we are left with only head knowledge. Of course, an informed mind can enhance our worship once our hearts are impacted! The New Covenant called for a New Song—a new worship response to the finished work of Christ in His death, resurrection, ascension, and exaltation!

Day 17: Enter in to the Throne Room with a Song of Enthronement . These are songs that declare the coronation of our King on high! Psalm 110:1-2 is such a song where the Lord God calls for His Son to be seated at His right hand until all His enemies are made His footstool. This passage is referred to by Peter at Pentecost in Acts 2:29-36. Pentecost was the installation of King Jesus and the inauguration of His everlasting government. In fact, Pentecost fulfills David's covenant promise that one of his seed would sit on the throne forever. Church, let's go up to Zion! Let us, through the Spirit, ascend into the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3; 2:6; Revelation 4:1).

Day 18: Acts 15:16 records James' quote of Amos 9:12 which refers to “the remnant of Edom” and a remnant of the nations being called by the Lord. Ask the Lord for a Song of Harvest . Notice when James quotes this he expands the remnant to “the rest of mankind.” Historically, David ruled over Edom and they paid him tribute. Jesus, the Son of David, will rule all the nations and the Church will reap a massive harvest from every tribe, kindred, tongue, and people! (Rev. 7:9). Psalm 126 sings of the harvest coming in after a time of tearful sowing. Church, we need to worshipfully sing the harvest in and evangelistically bring them in as sheaves carried by a harvester!

Day 19: Read Rev. 5:8-9 . Let Songs of Prophetic Declaration and Intercession arise within your heart . This is where we see harps and bowls in Heaven. Harps speak of worship and bowls of intercession. Our intercession is like incense ascending into Heaven which the angel collects in bowls. When the bowls are full, they are tipped and released by the angel into the earth realm in the form of voices, thunderings, lightnings, and earthquakes (Rev. 8:3-5). This sounds like the shaking at Mount Sinai. The point is: when we are faithful to corporately release incense through our intercession, the Lord is faithful to intervene in the situations and lives for which we have been praying! Don't miss this: we find the mingling and merging of worship (harps) and intercession (bowls) in both the Psalms and Revelation. This is the pattern for our corporate worship in the Body of Christ! This merger releases the dynamics of the prophetic ministry! Then we are emboldened to prophesy over churches, cities, nations, and civil governments. Amen!

Day 20: Read Exodus 15. Sing a Song of Victory and Deliverance . These songs are the results of the victory of God and His people over their enemies. The Exodus clearly presents this truth when the redeemed and delivered people of God sing of their deliverance from Egyptian bondage by the supernatural power of Jehovah. Their song has historical and prophetic dimensions. In fact, 40 years later when the spies met Rahab in Jericho, she told them that the men of Jericho began to fear the people of God when they heard of the Exodus. The prophetic song put fear into the hearts of our enemies ! In the book of Revelation, worship and intercession overcome apostate religious structures and beast-like political structures.

Day 21: Read James 5. Be sure any area where you are not operating in submission is dealt with.

Day 22: Read Acts 1:3 . This is the only place in the Bible where the word passion is used. Passion means to enter into the sufferings of the Lord against temptation. Passion deals with both your mind and your emotions, and is linked to resistance. Resist the number one thing that tempts you and watch the passion of Christ rise within you.

Day 23: Read Mt. 16 . Notice how Peter operated. He had great revelation, and then his mind and emotions kicked in and were occupied by Satan. Ask the Lord to bring your mind and emotions under control.

Day 24: Read Prov. 3:3-10 . Memorize these verses. I like them in the Amplified. Satan's plan is to tempt you in a way that you deviate from God's path for your life.

Day 25: Read Gen. 3 . Satan wants you to believe that God is not directing you. He also wants you to think that God is holding out on you. This is what he did to the woman in the garden as he manipulated her desires. Ask God to break any manipulation that is aligned with your desires.

Day 26: Read Ps. 37 . Be sure your desires are aligned correctly. Temptation is linked to desires that are not within God's boundaries.

Day 27: Read Mt. 4 . Resist Satan's temptation in your wilderness. Remember, the Spirit of God led Jesus into the wilderness. Stop in the midst of your hard situation and see the Spirit's leading.

Day 28: Read Luke 10:25 . Don't be drawn into the enemy's trap. I like to say it this way: don't swing at curve balls. The enemy will try to say things that will make you respond in a wrong way.

Day 29: Read the Lord's Prayer from Luke 11 . Ask the Lord to deliver you from temptation.

Day 30: Read Genesis 22 . Temptation is linked to our testing. See how God tested Abraham's faith and revealed Himself to Abraham as Jehovah Jireh.

The law of booty was that it should be divided equally between the army who won it and God's covenant people. A portion of the spoil was assigned to the oppressed, the aged, widows and orphans.

Day 31: Read Genesis 14 and 15 . God revealed Himself to Abraham as the ‘Possessor of Heaven and Earth'. This was in the context of war. Abraham gave to Melchizedek. Then notice the covenant God made with Abraham. Ask God to reaffirm your covenant with Him.

Day 32: Read Deut. 20. Read Deut 32:30 . One can put 1,000 to flight, but two can put 10,000 to flight. This is a valuable principle of multiplication. Ask the Lord for an increase in strength.

Day 33: Read 1 Sam. 30 . This is a transition chapter. The activities in this chapter released David into his next level of anointing. Especially notice verses 24-25. Receive new strength. Pursue and retrieve all!

Day 34: Read Is. 9:3 . The division of the spoil was a joyous feast for the people. Rejoice!

Day 35: Read Esther 3 and 8 . Let God develop your strategy to take back what the enemy has plotted to take from you.

Day 36: Read Deut. 8, especially verses 18-20 . Increase is a harvest principle. Increase rises through faith and follows deeds that are linked with faith. Increase comes through supernatural Kingdom connections so we can all enter into a multiplied, synergistic corporate measure of increase. Increase is also a reward for obedience. A fundamental question we need to ask ourselves is: What is wealth? There are several ways to look at wealth in the Bible. Power means vigor, strength, force, or capacity-whether physical, mental, or spiritual. Wealth means material substance, strength, and the spoils of war necessary to accomplish God's plan on earth.

Day 37: Read Luke 19 . Ask God what you have and how to multiply it.

Day 38: Read Ps. 115:14-16 and 2 Chron. 20 . Ask God for increase. Ask Him to give you a mind for increase. Ask Him to open your heart to any prophetic word that will bring you success and cause you to be able to rake in the spoils that the enemy is holding.

Day 39: Read Ps. 82:4 . Declare deliverance from the hand of the wicked who has tied up any of your wealth.

Day 40: Read Mal. 3 and 2 Cor. 10:3-6. Declare that the generational curse of “GOD ROBBING” will be broken out of your bloodline. This is one of the four major generational curses. Tear down mindsets of poverty. Poverty has a voice which says, “God is not able.” There are philosophies in your life that have developed wrong mindsets over wealth. Dismantle unbelief over provision . “Prove Me NOW” says the Lord! Look up and see the windows of blessings that He wants to open up. Watch Him overcome your devourer.
